Toad Impacts
Toads close to the WA border
In Qld and the NT cane toad infestation has caused the local extinction
of animals like quolls, fresh water crocodiles, goannas and elapid
snakes. Once cane toads colonise an area native frog populations
drop sharply. This and many longer term consequences of infestation
have yet to be fully understood. What we do know is that the news
is bad.
Cane Toad invasion will be traumatic for WA's unique ecology. It
will also have a serious impact on the State's fast growing nature
tourism industry. Tourism is worth $3.6billion to WA, much of it
tied to the perception of our environments being intact. Tourism
WA's $1.3 million "Real Thing" ad campaign must be made
real by action which protects the asset it promotes. We must take
steps to prevent WA becoming as blighted by toads as Qld and the
NT. In simple commercial terms we must preserve our point of difference.
If ever there was a mutual link between the economy and the environment
this is it.
